Ups and downs are part of marriage. Your marriage can’t be truly strong until you’ve had a few. One of the biggest tests a marriage can go through for the sake of happiness and harmony is a home improvement project. There are many different reasons this is the case. Here are a few of the major reasons these projects tend to test the strength of the marriage and your commitment to each other.
1) Failures to Communicate. This is a HUGE issue in marriages and in home improvement projects. Some people process information aurally while others are very visual. The difference is that some people can visualize by hearing a description while others need to actually see the picture in order to get an idea of what’s going to happen. When you mix the two there are going to be some problems arising with communication unless you take the time to make sure you’re on the same page throughout the process.
2) Budget Disagreements. This is another really big problem to overcome. We all have different ideas on spending money and saving money. But, when home improvements are in the process of happening, we overspend like crazy without realizing just how bad it’s gotten. You have to keep a close watch over your budget throughout the process and make sure that you are both aware that you must sacrifice something in order to make changes that are going to add to the project’s bottom line.
3) Exhaustion, Irritation, and Evaporation of Brain-Mouth Filters. Home improvement projects require a lot of hard work and long hours. It’s easy to say things you don’t mean during the process because you’re tired and not thinking. It’s also easy for a completely innocent comment to be taken out of context and blown completely out of control. No matter how much you love each other you’re going to get irritated with each other if you’re working on a home improvement project together that requires a lot of work over several days.
4) Disappointment and/or Let Down. After the project is complete there may be a feeling of disappointment or ‘let down’ if the project doesn’t live up to the beautiful mental image you had in mind. It’s easy to have great expectations that your budget can’t allow. The problem is that you have to live within your means and sometimes that can be a bit disappointing. Be careful that you don’t take it out on the person who has been working tirelessly and beyond by your side.
If your marriage was unable to pass these tests with flying colors that doesn’t mean it’s time for your marriage to end. There are still things you can do that will help you make your marriage stronger and help it last longer. Of course, you may have to figure out how to get your ex back first. But the free video in the link might make that process easier than you believe it will be.
